What Are You Talking About? - State Of The Union Commentary

Can I just say that our President is the man?

Admittedly, I've been off the Obama Kool Aid for a while now. After the emergence of the tea party, and what I found as missed opportunities to dominate the narrative, President Obama was starting to look like the aloof rookie that conservative media portrayed him to be. Yet, in this week's State of The Union address, he showed strength and resolve that I'd all but concluded he was lacking.

They Say Imitation is The Best Form of Flattery; I Say Eff That!

I've been grappling with my decision to talk about something that's been bothering me for about a week now.  After my internal debate was done, I concluded: This is MY blog and I can talk about anything I damn well please!

So...I had an issue that I wanted to know if ya'll can help me with.  Usually comments are not that important to me because I can see people are reading according my stats, and that's what really matters to me (btw, thanks for reading).  On this particular post, I plead with you to weigh in, because I actually care what you all think AND I also want to know if I'M buggin!

She Thinkin' Phillipe's; I'm Thinkin' "Boy, STOP!"

Recently my cousin B and I were hanging out and we ended up getting into a conversation about the lives we want to be living, as opposed to the ones we are. We talked about traveling abroad, experiencing more culture, and of course, fine dining. We figured...what better place to start than right here in our great city of New York?

Her birthday was in a few days and she told me about the plans she'd had to go to Phillipe Chow's in midtown. I'd heard of Mr. Chow but Phillipe's was new to me. She told me how it has become a trendy restaurant, as even the rappers have taken to shouting it out in songs. Honestly, I don't know if that made it more or less appealing but I do know that it intrigued me. She invited me to come along and we vowed this would be the start to us stepping outside of our box, and experiencing New York City and all it has to offer.

When we arrived at the restaurant, I was underwhelmed by the storefront which made me all the more anxious for what awaited us inside. When we get to the door, a nice gentleman opens it for us. We had no idea who he was and how he would impact our night.

Nightmare At The Showcase

Remember a few months ago when I told ya'll about the rap attacks my boo sporadically has.  If not check it out HERE.  So it seems they are starting to pay off.  His music career is starting to take off, at a steady pace.  You can probably imagine how happy I am for him.  Anytime someone is actually living their dream I'm happy for them 'cause so few people get to do that.  Often times we do what he have to do in order to do what he have to do.  Ya digg??  Add to that the fact that's it's MY boo and I couldn't be more excited for him.

He was presented with the opportunity to do a showcase for Hot 97 (if you're not from NY, that's our hip hop radio station).  As you can probably's a pretty big deal.  In the days leading up to the show, I hear him talking about it.  The songs he's gonna perform, what he's gonna wear, what he wants to portray.  But one thing I don't hear is "Boo, are you coming to my show?"

The day of the show comes.  He's getting all fly and ki-ki-ing it up on the phone with his boys, talking about the plans.  About 20 minutes before he leaves, I'm chillin' in my bed, in my robe and thinking "This mofo really not gon' ask me to come to his show."

So I say, "You didn't ask me to come to your show..."

He says, "Yeah...'cause I aint want you there."

Hold the mutha-effin' phone....WHAT??????

Letters To My Unborn Child - Handle With Care

Hi Baby,

There are many lessons that I plan to teach you over time. I'm sure you will have your share of lessons to teach me as well. One of the first things we'll show each other is how we expect to be treated. We'll teach ourselves how to be considerate of and careful with one another. You and I will undoubtedly have our share of disagreements baby, but as long as we have a certain amount of respect and consideration we'll get through them with minimal damage (or so I'm hoping - I hear all bets are off once you become a teenager). This, sweetheart, is how Mommy wants you to go into all situations, with respect and consideration.

A Dream Realized - In Remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King

Today is the day we remember a man so great that 40+ years after his death his legacy lives on in a way so tangible that everyone can feel it.

As I sit here at work, and listen to my Jewish boss listen to Mahalia Jackson belt away some old negro spiritual, it is not lost on me the impact that Dr. Martin Luther King had on the world.

My boss, an Argentinian Jew who admittedly had never laid eyes on a black person until he reached America well after his 21st birthday, can feel the depth of what Dr. King has done not only for this country but for the world. Often times, we as people, only look at the impact that has been made on us. That's a normal thing seeing as how it's always easier to get the full weight of something as it relates to you. But on this day I am reminded of all the lives Dr. King made a difference in. All the possibilities he made realities. All the sacrifices that he made in the name of equality. In the name of you and me.

What Are You Talking About? - Sarah Palin?? Ma'am??

Some people really know how to ruffle feathers.  Better yet, some people thrive on it.  They like to get a rise out of others and/or have them up in arms.  They call it passionate.  I call it too much time on their hands.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely heard about the tragic Arizona shooting.  If you have been living under a rock, catch up on it HERE.  Briefly, I can say that a madman opened fire at a public event killing six people, including a 9 year old girl, 3 seniors over the age of 75, and a federal judge. The shooter also critically injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  I won't even begin to go into the reasoning behind the shooting because as most logical people know, there is no reasoning for an event so tragic.  Trying to make sense of the senseless is futile.

What's alarming though was not only the tragedy itself, but the aftermath that was arguably comparable in it's senselessness.

I Just Calls 'Em How I See 'Em - Ole Fake A$% Snow Storm

What's the deal Mother Nature?  Ever heard of a snow day??

Everybody in the Northeast, namely New York, was looking forward to a nice, cozy day spent in the comforts of our own homes.  Much to our chagrin, we woke up this morning to snow plows and clear roads.  When I went to my front window and looked outside I was utterly confused.

I was hoping to see my street covered in a thick white blanket of snow.  Instead what I found was a big yellow monster that I hear they call a snow plow.  I walk back to the bed and lay there for a little while longer, wishing and hoping to get a phone call from the office telling us not to come in.

Finally, the phone rings.  Yes!  There is a snow day God.  Just my coworker.  Asking me if I received a call.  Womp Womp.  I dally around still waiting.  Then a thought occurs to me. Hey!  Why don't I be proactive?  I call my boss's cell phone.  He doesn't pick up.  Bad sign.  Maybe he's on his way into the office, or worse, there already.  I try the office phone.

He's in.

"Hey *insert Boss's name here*.  Just calling to see if the office was open but since you picked up I'm gonna take that as a yes. I'll be in as soon as I can."

Who told Bloomberg to get his sh*t together.  I LIKED having the city in disarray with no means of getting to work.  As long as I'm getting paid...I don't see a problem.  Call it lazy, call it triflin', better yet call it anything you like.  But I just calls 'em how I see 'em and this was one ole fake a$% snow storm!

A Funny Thing Happened in Aisle 6 At The Supermarket

Yesterday I was home chilling, doing what I do on Sundays (which is pretty much nothing).  Round 3ish, I realized dinner was fast approaching and I wanted to make a nice Sunday dinner of Cornish Hens, rice, and some variant of veggie.  So I picked up and headed out to the supermarket.  When I get there, I put on my IPOD and get in a zone.  I've been on a Rihanna kick lately, so I'm all dancing through the store probably looking like a loon but not caring in the least.

As I'm browsing the shelves (for the life of me I cannot remember what I was deciding between), who walks in the aisle?  My ex best friend and her sister.  Awwwwwkward.....

"Speechless" by Alicia Keys and Eve = DOPENESS

I identify with words which is why I so related to this video. Words can be either deeply meaningful or pretty inconsequential. Those times when words are, in the words of "The Purple One" Prince, "too weak to define" one's sentiments, that says more than words could ever say.

Whatever your feelings about A. Keys her being "speechless" conveyed the love she feels for her first born louder than anything she could have verbally said.(At least for me it did.)

I only pray that I can feel that joy one day.

What's Your Problem With MY New Year's Resolution?

First and foremost: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  I'm thanking God he saw fit for me to make it another year, and the same for anyone who may be reading this right now.  I hope that whatever happened last year, we can take it for what it was, and just leave it there.  In the past where it belongs.

Now that we've reached that time that comes once a year, where people makes their New Year's Resolutions, I'm left asking a question.

Of course there are the standard resolutions: lose weight, stop drinking/smoking, watch finances more wisely, go to church more.  Then there are the more personal, possibly a little more salacious ones like: stop being promiscuous, stop sleeping with that married (wo)man, or get a real job and stop hustling.  Whatever the resolution may be, everyone has something that they want to stop doing, vices that they want to give up, or things they want do better, so what is the problem with New Year's Resolutions?

I have a theory.  Click HERE to
